The numbers that matter most: 42 inches minimum walkway around an island, 48 inches in a two-cook kitchen, 36 inches of counter beside the range, 15 inches beside the refrigerator handle side, 30 inches above a cooktop, and 15 inches of knee clearance per seat at a counter overhang.
Walkways and aisles
| Location | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| Work aisle (one cook) | 42 in | 42–48 in |
| Work aisle (two cooks) | 48 in | 48–54 in |
| Walkway (no work zone) | 36 in | 42 in |
| Seating walkway behind stools | 32 in | 44 in to pass behind |
| Doorway / entry width | 32 in | 36 in |
The 42-inch aisle is the single most violated number in remodeled kitchens, and the one people regret most. It is measured from cabinet face to cabinet face, not from countertop edge — and appliance doors and dishwasher racks swing into that space.
Landing space beside appliances
| Appliance | Landing Space Required |
|---|---|
| Beside the range or cooktop | 12 in one side, 15 in the other (18 in preferred) |
| Beside the refrigerator | 15 in on the handle side, or across an aisle no wider than 48 in |
| Beside the sink | 24 in on one side, 18 in on the other |
| Beside the wall oven | 15 in adjacent, or directly across within 48 in |
| Beside the microwave | 15 in above, below, or adjacent |
Heights and vertical clearances
Standard counter height is 36 inches; a bar counter is 42 inches and a table-height counter is 30 inches. The backsplash gap between counter and upper cabinets is 18 inches standard, 20 inches where small appliances live on the counter.
Above a cooktop, allow 30 inches to a range hood as a general minimum, and confirm against the hood and range manufacturer’s instructions — those specifications govern, and they vary by BTU output and hood type. Over an island with no cooking, pendant lights typically hang 30 to 36 inches above the counter.
Seating and knee space
Each seat needs 24 inches of linear counter width. Knee clearance depends on counter height: 30-inch table-height counters need 18 inches of overhang, 36-inch standard counters need 15 inches, and 42-inch bar counters need 12 inches. Skimping here is what produces the seating nobody ever sits at.
Islands specifically
A useful island is at least 24 inches deep for a single-sided work surface, 36 to 39 inches deep if it carries seating, and 42 to 48 inches deep if it has a sink or cooktop plus seating. Length under 40 inches rarely justifies the floor space it consumes. And every one of those depths has to leave the 42-inch aisle intact on all four sides — the island is sized by what the room has left, not the other way around.
Local codes and manufacturer instructions govern where they are stricter than these figures. Planning a project? See our kitchen remodeling in Fort Worth page.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the minimum clearance around a kitchen island?
42 inches of clear floor between the island and any facing cabinet, appliance, or wall — 48 inches if two people cook at once or if an appliance door opens into that aisle. Measure cabinet face to cabinet face.
How much counter space do you need next to a range?
12 inches on one side and 15 inches on the other, with 18 inches preferred on the primary working side. This is landing space for hot pans, and it is the clearance most often sacrificed in a tight layout.
What is the standard distance between counter and upper cabinets?
18 inches is standard. 20 inches is better where a coffee maker, mixer, or toaster lives permanently on the counter. Below 15 inches the counter stops being usable for anything with height.
How much overhang does counter seating need?
15 inches of knee clearance at a standard 36-inch counter, 18 inches at a 30-inch table-height counter, and 12 inches at a 42-inch bar counter. Allow 24 inches of counter width per seat.
How high should a range hood be above the cooktop?
Roughly 30 inches above the cooking surface is a common minimum, but always follow the hood and range manufacturer’s installation instructions and local code — the required height changes with BTU output, hood style, and whether the unit is ducted.
