The five that matter: forcing in an island the room cannot hold, stopping upper cabinets short of the ceiling, using doors instead of drawers in base cabinets, skipping under-cabinet lighting, and sacrificing the landing space beside the range. All five are decided during design and expensive to fix later.
1. Forcing in an island
An island needs 42 inches of clear aisle on all four sides — roughly 13 feet of kitchen width once base cabinets are accounted for. Below that, an island makes the kitchen worse: every trip to the refrigerator becomes a negotiation and two people cannot pass.
Instead: a peninsula attached to the existing run. It gives the same counter and seating with walkway on three sides rather than four, and it usually keeps the plumbing in the walls where it already is.
2. Stopping the uppers short of the ceiling
Cabinets ending at 84 inches leave a dust shelf and forfeit a full row of storage — in a small kitchen, that is storage you cannot afford to give away. It also makes the ceiling look lower, not higher.
Instead: run cabinets to the ceiling, or to a soffit with crown molding. Use the top row for seasonal and rarely accessed items.
3. Doors instead of drawers in the base cabinets
A base cabinet with a door requires kneeling and reaching past the front to find what is at the back. Half the volume becomes storage you avoid using.
Instead: deep drawers throughout the base run. Usable capacity is dramatically higher for the same box, and everything comes to you. It costs more per cabinet and is the highest-return upgrade in a small kitchen.
4. Skipping under-cabinet lighting
Ceiling fixtures sit behind you when you face a counter, so your own body casts a shadow onto exactly the surface you are working on. More recessed cans produce a brighter shadow.
Instead: LED strips mounted toward the front edge of the upper cabinet bottoms, wired during construction so no cord runs down the backsplash. Cheapest high-impact change in the kitchen.
5. Sacrificing the landing space beside the range
In a tight layout, the counter beside the cooktop is the first thing squeezed. It is also where hot pans have to go. A range with three inches of counter beside it is a daily hazard, not just an inconvenience.
Instead: protect 12 inches on one side and 15 on the other, 18 preferred on the working side. Take the space from somewhere less critical — a narrower pantry cabinet, a smaller sink.
| Mistake | Cost to Fix Later |
|---|---|
| Island in too small a room | Full cabinetry rework |
| Uppers stopped short | New upper cabinets |
| Doors instead of drawers | New base cabinets |
| No under-cabinet lighting | Opening the backsplash wall |
| No landing space at the range | Full layout change |
Every one of them is nearly free to get right during design and expensive to correct afterward.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the biggest mistake in a small kitchen remodel?
Installing an island the room cannot support. It requires 42 inches of clear aisle on every side, meaning about 13 feet of kitchen width. Below that it actively makes the kitchen harder to use.
Should kitchen cabinets go all the way to the ceiling?
In a small kitchen, yes. It adds a full row of storage, eliminates the dust shelf, and draws the eye upward. Stopping short wastes storage you cannot spare and does not make the room feel taller.
Are drawers better than doors in base cabinets?
Considerably, especially in a small kitchen. Deep drawers bring the entire contents to you rather than requiring you to reach past the front. Usable capacity is much higher for the same cabinet box.
How much counter space do I need beside the range?
12 inches on one side and 15 on the other, with 18 preferred on the primary working side. This is landing space for hot pans, and it is the clearance most often sacrificed in a tight layout.
What is the cheapest high-impact upgrade in a small kitchen?
Under-cabinet lighting. Ceiling fixtures put your own shadow on the counter; LED strips at the front edge of the upper cabinets light the work surface directly, and the material cost is minimal.
