A curbless shower requires recessing the shower floor into the structure so water drains without a curb to contain it. That means either a depressed slab pour or modified floor framing, a linear or offset drain, a precise slope, and a waterproofing membrane that runs continuously past the opening into the bathroom floor.

Why a curb exists in the first place

A curb is a dam. It gives water a physical barrier and it gives the waterproofing membrane a place to terminate above the floor line. Remove it and both jobs have to be done differently — by slope alone, and by extending the waterproofing beyond the shower into the surrounding floor.

That is the entire difficulty of a curbless shower, and it is why the failures are not subtle. When a curbless shower is built wrong, water does not stay in the shower. It travels under the tile into the bathroom floor, into the subfloor, and eventually into whatever is below.

What the build actually requires

  • A recessed floor. On a slab, that means the shower area is depressed in the pour or the slab is cut and lowered. On pier-and-beam or a second floor, the floor joists are modified with engineering to drop the shower pan area.
  • Correct slope. The pan slopes to the drain at a consistent fall — enough to move water, gentle enough that the floor does not feel tilted. Linear drains at the back wall allow a single-plane slope, which is why they are the common choice.
  • Continuous waterproofing. The membrane runs up the walls, across the pan, and outward past the shower opening into the bathroom floor — typically at least two to three feet — so the inevitable overspray lands on a waterproofed surface.
  • Threshold detailing. The transition from shower to bathroom floor has to be dead flat and continuously sealed. This is the joint that leaks in bad installations.
  • Containment strategy. A larger footprint, a well-placed glass panel, or a fixed showerhead position so water is not thrown at the opening.

Why DIY and cut-rate versions fail

Three reasons, and they are always the same three. The floor was never recessed — someone built up the surrounding floor instead, producing a ramp that reads as a mistake and a slope that does not drain. The waterproofing stopped at the shower opening instead of continuing into the bathroom floor, so the first splash outside the shower goes into the subfloor. The slope is wrong — too flat and water stands, uneven and it runs toward the door.

None of those are visible after the tile goes on. All of them show up in six months to three years as soft flooring, a musty smell, or a stain on the ceiling below.

What it costs, and when it is worth it

A curbless shower typically adds $2,000 to $6,000 over a comparable curbed shower, driven by the structural work to recess the floor and the extended waterproofing. It is worth it when the bathroom is being built for aging in place, when the space is small enough that a curb visually chops it up, or when a wet-room layout is the best use of a tight footprint.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do curbless showers leak more than regular showers?

A correctly built one does not. The failure rate is higher across the market because the margin for error is smaller — the waterproofing has to extend beyond the shower and the slope has to be right, with no curb as a backup.

Can you make an existing shower curbless?

Sometimes. On a slab it means cutting and lowering the concrete in the shower area. On a framed floor it means modifying joists, which requires engineering. Neither is a surface-level change, which is why it is done during a full bathroom remodel.

How much bigger does a curbless shower need to be?

Not necessarily bigger, but water containment gets harder as the footprint shrinks. Roughly 42x60 or larger with a well-placed glass panel handles overspray comfortably; a very small curbless shower needs careful showerhead placement.

Is a linear drain required for a curbless shower?

Not required, but common, because a linear drain at the wall lets the floor slope in a single plane rather than four planes toward a center point. That makes large-format tile possible and simplifies getting the slope right.

Are curbless showers good for aging in place?

Yes — they are the single most effective bathroom feature for long-term accessibility, removing the step that causes falls and allowing walker or wheelchair access. Add blocking behind the walls during construction so grab bars can be installed later.
