A double vanity needs at least 60 inches of width to fit two sinks, and 72 inches to make them comfortable. Below 60 inches the sinks crowd each other and there is no usable counter between them. Standard depth is 21 to 22 inches and standard height is 36 inches.

The number people underestimate is the counter between the two sinks. That strip is where everything actually lands — and at 60 inches of total width there is essentially none of it. A single sink with a long uninterrupted counter is more useful than two sinks crammed into 54 inches.
Standard heights and depths
Height. 30 to 32 inches is the older standard and reads low for most adults. 34 to 36 inches is now the norm, and 36 inches — the same as a kitchen counter — is what most people find comfortable. Taller than 36 inches becomes awkward for children and for washing your face.
Depth. 21 to 22 inches is standard for the cabinet, with the countertop at 22 to 25 inches including any overhang. A shallower 18-inch vanity works in a powder room or a tight hallway bath but limits sink and faucet options.
Sink spacing. Center the sinks at least 30 inches apart, and 36 inches is better. Measured from the outside edge, allow at least 12 inches from the wall or side of the cabinet to the sink center so the faucet has room and elbows are not against the wall.
Clearances around the vanity
A vanity does not exist alone. Allow 30 inches of clear floor in front of it as an absolute minimum, and 36 to 42 inches if the room allows — someone has to stand there while a drawer or a door is open. Where the vanity faces a toilet or a shower door across the room, that clearance is measured to whatever is opposite, and door swings count.
Toilets need their own clearance regardless of the vanity: typically at least 15 inches from the toilet centerline to any wall or fixture on each side, and 21 inches of clear space in front. Cramming a double vanity into a room by squeezing the toilet is a code problem, not just a comfort one.
When a double vanity is the wrong answer
In a bathroom under about 8 feet of vanity wall, two sinks cost you the counter space that makes a bathroom work. Two people getting ready at once need counter as much as they need a second bowl. If the wall is short, consider a single sink with a long counter and a separate makeup station, or a single sink with a second mirror and outlet position. It is a better bathroom.
