Closed-cell spray foam applied directly to the roof and wall panels is the most effective insulation for a Texas metal building. It insulates, air-seals, and stops condensation in one step — which matters more here than R-value alone, because the failure mode in Texas is moisture and radiant heat, not cold.
Why Texas changes the answer
Most insulation advice is written for cold climates, where the job is holding heat in. In North Texas the job is different: keeping radiant heat out of a metal roof that reaches extreme surface temperatures in July, and stopping condensation when hot humid air meets a cooled steel panel. A metal building with high R-value batts and no air seal will still sweat, and a sweating building rusts, grows mold, and ruins whatever is stored under it.

Closed-cell spray foam, and why it wins here
Sprayed directly onto the underside of the roof and wall panels, closed-cell foam does three jobs at once: it insulates at a high R-value per inch, it air-seals the assembly, and because it is a vapor retarder that adheres to the steel, warm humid air never reaches a cold panel surface to condense on. It also adds rigidity to the panels. For a barndominium or any conditioned metal building in North Texas, it is the approach that gives the fewest problems.
The tradeoff is cost, and the fact that it is effectively permanent — foam adhered to panels is difficult to remove, and it can complicate future panel replacement or leak tracing.
Where the cheaper options still make sense
A fiberglass blanket system with a proper vapor facing, installed over the purlins as the panels go on, is the standard approach for unconditioned shops and equipment storage. It is dramatically cheaper and perfectly adequate when the building is not air conditioned. The critical detail is the vapor facing and the laps — a torn or badly lapped facing is how those buildings end up dripping.
Radiant barriers and rigid board are supplements rather than solutions. A radiant barrier under the roof panel meaningfully reduces heat gain in a Texas summer, but it does not air-seal and it does not solve condensation on its own.
The detail that decides everything
Insulation on a metal building is not a product decision, it is a sequencing decision. Blanket systems have to be installed as the panels go on — retrofitting them afterward is far more expensive and rarely as tight.
